IGNITe/400 Mailing List Archive Entry
Rod,

This is extremely good news indeed. The 400 needs a cost performance
superstar at the low end. I still say they need a $3000 (full price with
software and enough resources to run it) entry model to go head to head with
NT and win. They really need a $1500 desktop model.

My ISP buys INTEL PC's and runs Berkley Unix on his servers. He buys a
suped up Ethernet card, puts 128mb of memory on board and runs a 4g hard
drive on these little servers. They are incredibly fast for standard web
pages with PERL5 and C++ CGI programs.

The AS/400 weighs in as a winner at the $30k level, but doesn't have much to
offer to the very small business, or to the ISP who counts every penny.

RE: AS/400 vs PC Speed Comparisons?

Bob,

Glad to help. And if you like the tail kicking the 170 did in that
benchmark, take a look at the new ones announced yesterday. They pack some
serious punch in a very attractive package. The 170-2176 CSL tested has a
constrained CPW of 125. The new 170-2385 is a blazing 460 CPW which is more
than the 2-way S30.

Time to get off my soap box. ;-)

Rod,

Just what the doctor ordered! Pretty amazing study! I especially like the
mhz ratings on the AS/400 RISC boxes which Client Server Labs apparently
measured or IBM gave up grudgingly. Shows that MHZ ain't everthing!

Interesting that only one of IBM's PC's were tested???

The messages seems pretty clear, the Model 170 kicks tail flat out! If
anyone is running older machines, it's time to send them to a third world
country and upgrade! Even my skeptical boss has seen the light!

Thanks again,

Bob C.

Bob,

Take a look at Client Server Labs benchmark comparisons. They compare the
AS/400 to NT on various platforms running client/server workloads. The
results are at http://www.cslinc.com/benchmarks/resultos.htm

AS/400 vs PC Speed Comparisons?

Bob Cancilla

All,

My apologies in advance if you get a double post on this as I am posting it
to the I/Net and IGNITe400 lists.

My users are questioning the CPI vs Mhz ratings of Pentium based PC's and
the AS/400. We have 266mhz NT server that seems to perform better in many
respects when compared to our AS/400 model 40S server.

Does anyone know of a study that compares the AS/400 to other boxes? Does
anyone know how to translate CPI ratings published by IBM to a number that
can be compare with other computers?

I know this is bizzare, but it comming up more and more often and we need
to
see these numbers. The reason I'm posting to the I/Net list is the fact
that folks are stating that A Pentium II 400mhz machine with 128megs of
Memory will perform as well or better at a cost of about $1500 per box
compared to an AS/400 Model 170 and has a lot more software capabilities
when running MS/II or Netscape, or Apache server software.

We all know that they have the ease of use software, but what about
performance?

Thanks

Bob C.
