Darin,

We have been in touch with the development team in Rochester. We were given
a "beta" port for V4R2 which
solves some of the problems with the current public port located at CPAN.
This port implemented "standard"
STDIN and STOUT support in addition to providing support for named pipes.
Unfortuantely it ran under the
new Qshell (IBM's implementation of the KORN shell for the AS/400) and
requires a $200 PRPQ called the
Qshell Utilities (IBM port of some basic UNIX commands typically used by
PERL).

Unfortunately there were some bugs in the PORT that had to do with the
systems ability to pass the directory
path of PERL programs to PERL which made it virtually useless.

I was told just yesterday that IBM has refunded the PERL port project. They
are in the process of porting
the latest version of PERL and "MAY" actually support it as they do any
other ported Internet product. We
have a vendor that provides multi-national credit card clearing in multiple
currencies in the UK that we have
been trying to work with. We have discussed the need for total and complete
PERL support with IBM.

We believe that we will soon (I can't define that) see full and complete
PERL-5 support on the AS/400. Bleddyn and
I have opened some eyes in Rochester. We have convinced folks that if they
provide full PERL support like they do
with JAVA, then folks can pick up thousands of applications free or very
inexpensively from the vast repositories of
public domain code.

I would expect that this shouldn't take more than a few months, and this
time I hope they get it RIGHT! The Qshell
Utilities will be something to watch also. We've lobbied for complete UNIX
command compatibility. We've made it
painfully clear that when you PORT PERL, it is a UNIX scripting front end
that runs UNIX commands on the backend. If
you can't support the UNIX commands you can't support PERL.

BobC.

Setting Up AS/400 to run perl CGI

Darin Dutcher

Can the AS/400 run perl CGI scripts and how do you set this up if it can.
I noticed our box has a USR dir with a BIN directory in the IFS root of the
system. I would think that since this is there, I should be able to put
perl in that location and run CGI scripts that point there.

Thank you for any help you might give.
