Folks

It took a while, but we now support session naming based from TCP Host
Names:

-DISPLAY_NAME USE_HOST_NAME and -DISPLAY_NAME USE_HOST_NAME+n are
supported
in
5250 Rel 3 PTF3, which is available now. It will be available to 3270 users
in
the near future as well.

The 'Host Name' of the Network Station (read from the DNS) is used to create
5250 display names on the AS/400 and 3270 LU names on the S/390.

In AS/400 terms, this will be critical for customers who wish to force
display
devices to use specific names rather than QPADEVxxxx, MAC addresses or user
IDs. MAPICS is an example of one such application. In this scenario, the
AS/400
could be used as the DNS server ( OS/400 V4R2 onwards ).

Lower case characters are converted to upper case by the emulator. The
emulator will truncate names as necessary (10 characters maximum for AS/400
and
8 characters for S/390). Truncation is done to period delimiters; for
example,
a Network Station with a host name of ns23.rchland.ibm.com would have a
5250
display name of NS23

Please be aware that the Network Station doesn't "know" its hostname by
default
so will need to query the DNS server - this will add delay to the the
startup
of the 5250 session. The lesson is (a) only use this if you need it and (b)
ensure that your DNS information is held/replicated locally.
