Answers to your
LINUX questions
Q 1) What if we
don't like SuSE (I for
one love it but then that is just me)
what if we want RedHat or some other flavour?
A 1) IBM is currently
working with SuSE,
RedHat, and TurboLinux.
These 3 vendors have discussed plans to support
all the IBM eServer platforms.
Q 2) If so will
IBM enhance that version of SuSE to be more (......ummm,
native? connected? interwoven?) with OS/400?
A 2) SuSE
is responsible for the SuSE product, not IBM.
The integration we provide between LINUX and OS/400
is independent of the specific LINUX
distribution. For example the Toolbox for
Java provides a JDBC driver for
DB2/400. This will work with a LINUX distribution
with a JVM.
Q 3) For instance;
will I be able to use Perl
(for SuSE for iSeries) to
access DB2 databases?
A 3) This support
is not available today. These type of functions,
when and if
they are available, are not planned to be
tied to a specific distribution.
Q 4) If so will
the integration be secure or will I
stand a chance of getting
rooted on the LINUX side and then get a
spike through the heart on the OS/400 side?
A 4) We
have worked very hard to make LINUX secure
within LPAR. We do not want LINUX to be able to
impact an OS/400 partition.
Q 5) Will I get
an X windows server with my SuSE distribution?
A 5) Since the SuSE
distribution for iSeries is the whole SuSE distribution,
there is indeed X Windows support in the
distribution.
Q 6) What will be
the kernel version?
A 6) 2.4
will be the shipped version.
Q 7) Is there a
potential that it will support USB? Will it be
something like
the NT implementation of a few years ago, where
you were forced to connect a stinkin
mouse-monitor-and-keyboard to my AS/400
in order to install and configure SuSE.
A 7) There is no
requirement to have a display and keyboard
attached to the iSeries to run LINUX in a partition.
The console for the partition is accessed over
the network with a standard telnet client.
Q 8) Will there
be a link between the two halves (and I don't
mean some clunky telnet from the 5250 side, I
mean config tools residing on the OS/400
side)?
A 8) Yes there is
a Virtual LAN link between
partitions. With virtual I/O support, OS/400
manages the disk, tape, CD, and LAN resources.
There are no OS/400 tools to configure LINUX itself,
this is done with LINUX tools.
