It is quick, its easy, and reduces administration to a web based piece of cake! Want to webface some 5250 apps and didn't want to face WebSphere administration, installation and configuration? This new lightweight WebSphere Application Server runs on all new iSeries machines, is administered via the Apache based HTTP Server's web based gui! IGNITe/400 is now POWERED BY APACHE -- 09/16/2002 by Bob Cancilla
Well, it took a while, but IGNITe/400 is now powered by the IBM HTTP Server Based on Apache and running on V5R2 on a 270e Model 2242 with 4GB memory. The V5R2 version of the server is extremely impressive. We have our long requested log file management (much better than the public domain version of Apache)and a superb GUI interface!

IBM listened to users and built a terrific interface for maintaining the server. The new gui is also extremely fast!

The only downside is the migration wizard which remains extremely disappointing. We strongly recommend in migrating original HTTP Server configs to Apache by hand. There are some serious problems in the wizard pertaining to basic authentication. If you use it, test your server thoroughly before implementing it in production.

IBM Proves it can support Apache Based Server on iSeries -- 06/28/2002 by Bob Cancilla

Recently CERT issued a major alert (CA-2002-17) affecting Apache HTTP Server world wide. The Apache Software Group rapidly responded with fixes to Version 1.3 of the server. It was much slower with fixes for Version 2.x. The iSeries was affected by this warning. IBM responded to this major security exposure in record time and has released new group PTF's for both V5R1 and V4R5 of OS/400.

You should order and apply V4R5 (5769-DG1) SF99035 or V5R1 (5722-DG1) SF99156 dated 6/27/2002. Our thanks to the terrific folks at IBM who once again demonstrate the reliability and dependability of the iSeries. This was a terrific effort with results being produced in record time. Thanks IBM.

Help IBM Perfect the HTTP Server Based on Apache! -- 05/08/2002 by Bob Cancilla
IBM Rochester would like some real world, working server configuration
files for both the "original" IBM HTTP Server and IBM HTTP Server (powered
by Apache) to determine whether they can offer more complex coverage for
their migration wizard and GUI interfaces. IBM may benefit in helping
improve their test suites and we may benefit in improved quality. There
may be some commonalities across the configuration files that could
potentially result in future articles or product enhancements if IBM sees
some common concerns in multiple user configuration files.

If you would like to participate, send an email to rchapach@us.ibm.com stating you wish to participate. You will receive a return email
explaining the terms and conditions under which IBM can accept your
configuration file.

Using Windows Servers to Frontend your iSeries??? -- 02/07/2002 by Bob Cancilla
In a recent speech where Bill Gates announced that Microsoft was taking security seriously, he used the phrase "Trustworthy Computing" as if he were thinking about copyrighting it. Someone has put a twist on this and created a web site that redirects to a google search on MS security exposures. If you are using Microsoft Servers to frontend your iSeries and the Gartner Group position paper didn't convince you of the error of your ways click the link here and see exactly how "Trustworthy" MS is!
